5 Things You Need to Know About Irene's Aftermath

FEMA update, debris disposal, power back by Friday

Flood waters are subsiding, some and you have branches and other debris from the cleanup after Hurricane Irene. Here's information from the township to help you facilitate the cleanup process.

From the Montville Township website:

  1. FEMA Financial Assistance: Montville is working on the Federal Emergency Management Agency process for homeowners and businesses, including a municipal damage assessment to be submitted to the county and then to the state.

In the meantime you should: (1) Contact your insurance company (2) Document all damage—make a list and take pictures if possible; (3) Save all receipts (4) Get back into the home when possible. FEMA has not deemed disaster zones yet, and until they do, they won't provide info. Once disaster zones are declared, the FEMA number is 800-621-3362. The website DisasterAssistance.gov is an excellent source of information.

"Ultimately we anticipate that Federal Aid will be approved and that FEMA will establish a team that will handle individual applications in Montville," the town said.

  2. Garbage Collection/Disposal of Debris: Garbage collection will continue as normally scheduled. Montville is working with its garbage hauler to conduct curb-side collection of furniture, carpeting, sheetrock, etc. Put your debris out at the curb and it will be collected through the normal schedule or through special collections as the hauler's schedule allows.

  3. Water:  Some communities in New Jersey are being told to boil water, Montville Township is NOT one of these communities.  Montville Township's water is safe to drink without any precautions. Residents who are in need of potable water can fill water bottles at the rear of the municipal building. Take the driveway around the back on the east side of the building.

  4. Showers: Men's & women's showers were available at for residents in need of them on Tuesday night, and they might be made available again if necessary.

  5. Power Outages: In the event of a power outage, please call the Jersey Central Power & Light Outage Reporting Line: 888-544 -4877. Do not call 911 or the Police Department for power outages. The Police Department cannot do anything to resolve power outages and your call could delay their response to emergencies. The latest information we have from JCP&L is that they anticipate electric service will be restored by Friday. A power outage map is on the JCP&L website. For pump-outs, information, or to report property damage, call the Montville Police Department at 973-257-4300.

  6. (BONUS) Passaic River: Information on the level of rivers in the area can be found on the National Weather Service's website.
