Lazar Students Host 'Seniors Prom'

Middle school students and senior citizens danced and dined down memory lane.

Approximately eighty senior citizens from the Montville Township Senior House attended the Robert R. Lazar Middle School’s “Seniors Prom” on Thursday, April 24.

The “Seniors Prom” dinner dance was hosted by Lazar’s eighth grade Character Education Advisory Group. The twenty-five students of the Advisory Group planned, researched and organized the community project as an opportunity for middle school students and senior citizens to socialize.

“Black & White” was the 2014 theme. The decoration and invitation committees designed “Black & White” invitations and transformed the school with classic decorations. All students assisted with set-up and preparation for the spring dinner dance.

Music was provided by the Robert R. Lazar Middle School Jazz Band and Flute Choir.

The Advisory Group’s entertainment committee worked with the music department to research music and develop a playlist based on the kind of music that would have been popular when the senior citizens were middle school age. Together the entertainment committee and the music department prepared for a retro evening of 1950’s and 1960’s classic tunes.

Knowing that the seniors also enjoy line dances, the committee scheduled many line dancing songs.

A full course dinner was served including a variety of desserts made by the food committee.

The twenty-five students worked on the “Seniors Prom” all year. Everyone was involved in preparing for Thursday’s dance. During the event, students also served as greeters and seaters, beverage servers, and appetizer servers. In addition, all students participated in dinner service, dessert service and the final cleanup.

“It’s unbelievable!” said Principal Sharon Carr of the Lazar “Seniors Prom.”  “It’s quite the extravaganza!”

Teacher Advisors, Jeanne Matuszewski, Mike Miller, and Adrienne Scognamiglio led Lazar’s eighth grade Character Education Advisory Group in their “Seniors Prom” project.
