Island Musical Comes to Montville

A musical twist on 'The Little Mermaid' and 'My Love, My Love.'

Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville Township will present the musical, “Once on This Island, Jr.” April 3 and 4.

Adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” and based on the novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy, “Once on This Island, Jr.” is the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues Daniel, a young man from a wealthy family.  When Daniel is returned to his own land, the gods, who rule the island, guide Ti Moune on a quest which tests the strength of her love for Daniel against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

Set against the sunny backdrop of the Caribbean, “Once on This Island, Jr.” features almost seventy of Lazar’s sixth through eighth grade students.  More than forty of the students will perform Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens’ music and lyrics through song and dance. Twenty-five more will bring the show to life through sets, lights, costumes and sound.
