Most People Don't Plan to Fail -- They Fail to Plan

Last week, I called a former client, Lucy, to thank her for referring her friend and colleague. Lucy told me that when she heard this person talk about her particular situation, it reminded her of the time when she felt the same way- confused, overwhelmed and not sure what direction to take. When someone like Lucy calls me, this is how it works. Together, we met her mother in the home, talking at the kitchen table. I asked key questions and listened closely. I then developed a written plan of care with goals and information addressing the particular problems and issues that were unique to her mom and their family. Lucy felt confident of what direction she needed to take for the well being of her mother. And it was in writing so she could go back and look at what she needed to do.

Navigating the health care system has become very difficult. Looking for answers while in a health care crisis makes it even more complicated. And yet, I receive calls every day when people are in crisis. When I founded Caring Choices 24 years ago, I was excited to think I would reach people before bad decisions were made. I am still excited to be helping older adults and their caregivers. I often have to tell my clients when I meet with them that I wished they had called me sooner. It’s confusing, especially when you are emotionally overwhelmed.

When you meet with me, a geriatric care manager or an elder law attorney to plan for care, steps can be taken that will save money and you will be in less distress when you are faced with health care decisions. There is so much you need to know. It starts with a phone call.
