Montville Pocket Park Plans to Be Shared by Canal Society

Montville Township Historical Society to host presentation on Morris Canal Greenway park.

The Montville Township Historical Society will host Joe Macasek, vice president of the Canal Society of New Jersey, on March 11 to talk about plans for a Morris Canal Greenway Park in Montville.

"A Morris Canal Greenway park is being established at Plane 9 East with the Montville Township Historical Society and the Canal Society of NJ, creating a linear pocket park along the portion of Plane 9 East’s site, extending from the plane summit to the intersection of Emery Lane and Route 202," according to a press release sent by Montville Township Histrical Society Chairwoman Kathy Fisher. "Volunteers from the historical society and the Canal Society are working to clear brush and debris from the plane site to create a park."

Other local contributors will also assist with making the park an enjoyable place for Montville residents to spend time. A nearby developer contributed funds for signage and local Eagle Scout Michael Moschetti has recently mulched a path on the property, removing trash and fallen trees and branches from the canal prism, Fisher said.

Montville Township has three inclined planes located within the municipality where the canal passes through Montville and Towaco. Remains of the canal, such as rip rap and sleeper stones, can be found in Plane 9 East, where the park will be constructed, Fisher said. Plane 9 East is owned by Montville Township.

The presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Montville Township Senior House.
