Patch 'Gives 5' at Montville Animal Shelter

Potential pets ready for adoption.

As part of Patch's annual Give 5 volunteerism effort, I stopped by the Montville Animal Shelter, on River Road, Wednesday to spend some time helping out.

As of 10 a.m., it was feeding time for the cats and the dozens of felines were "yelling" for breakfast!

About 60 cats and nearly a dozen dogs are currently staying at the shelter, according to Gail Strumph, who works the shelter and also serves as one of the township's animal control officers. Following Strumph around, I was able to learn about the shelter's morning routine, feeding each cat, prepping them for playtime and cleaning out their cages.

In addition to keeping the animals cool and well-cared for, the shelter is getting ready for a move to 7 Church Lane (from the current River Road location) by the end of the summer. Strumph said volunteers are planning to begin the move by August and slowly continue until the shelter is fully operational in its new space.
