Hunger Walk 2013 comes to Morristown on Sunday, Oct. 20. That's the day more than 900 caring county residents are expected to take to the streets for a 5K walk to benefit the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center.
Why do people walk? The cause: Morristown-based CSK provides nutritious meals in a warm, safe and caring environment, free of charge, no questions asked, to anyone who comes seeking nourishment. The nonprofit also helps those in need to access community resources, services and educational programs. Last year, the kitchen served more than 54,000 meals, according to its website—an average of 100 to 350 men, women and children each day.
Programs CSK offers include:
- Mental health counseling
- Substance abuse outreach
- Outreach to veterans
- Employment counseling and an Annual Job Fair
- Housing and daily living assistance such as accessing food stamps
- Nursing consultations and health screenings
- Emergency assistance for food, clothing and basic necessities
- English as a Second Language classes
Hunger Walk 2013 gives participants the opportunity not only to help raise funds and awareness, but to learn something. Each will assume the identity of a composite Soup Kitchen guest and track their character’s story through cards handed out at story stations during the 5K (3.1 miles) walk.
Rain or shine, the walk will proceed Oct. 20 starting at 1 p.m. at the CSK dining hall in the Church of the Redeemer, 36 South St. in Morristown. All walkers raising $100 or more will receive a free Hunger Walk T-shirt.
To register or donate, head to the CSK website. For more information, call 973-267-0709 or email volunteer@CSKMorristown.org.
