Temperature Hits 100 As Heat Wave Continues

Rest of the week to be equally hot.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Montville on Tuesday are expected to get as high as 100 degrees as part of the heat wave that is affecting the east coast.

The rest of the week looks no better. Temperatures are predicted to be in the high 90s until the weekend, when things are expected to cool down to 85 degrees on Sunday.

The service has issued an air quality advisory for Tuesday from until 6:45 p.m. for Montville and Morris County, as well as heat advisory until 7 p.m. for the nearby counties of Bergen, Essex, Passaic and Sussex.

According to New Jersey Power and Light, as many as 500 customers may experience loss of power in the Towaco area, including the nearby towns on Chatham, Mount Arlington, Mountain Lakes and Wharton.

Both the Lake Valahalla Club and the Longview Club at Montville offer swimming facilities. Neither is open to the public, but members can bring guests to cool off.

Many local buildings, including the public library and municipal building, offer air conditioning and are open to the public as a place to get out of the heat for a big.

In responce to the heat, the Morris County website has releasedtips for combatting heat exhusttion and heat stroke. According to Morris County Health Officer Carlos Perez, fluid intake is essential.

"The best defense is prevention," he said. The full Morris County release can be viewed here.

The American Red Cross offers these tips to deal with the heat:

  • Never leave children or pets alone in an enclosed vehicle.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Eat small meals, and eat more often.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored, lightweight clothing.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Postpone outdoor sports and activities.
  • Use the buddy system when working outdoors in the excessive heat.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors, who do not have air conditioning, who spend a lot of time alone or may be affected by the heat.
  • Check on your animals frequently to make sure they are not suffering because of the heat.
