Car show at 4th of July Celebration

Gentlemen, start your engines.

Montville kicked off its annual Fourth of July celebration Friday night with a massive car show at the High School athletic fields. Classic cars from all over the area were on display for judgment and general enjoyment.

Some cars, like the jet-black 1954 Chevey, nicknamed "Class of '54," looked show-room clean. Others, like the brown Chrysler Town and Country station wagon, could have benefited from a wash and wax. Other cars, like one red Bugatti, were equipped with what one owner called"the original GPS system."

"Wherever you go, it leaves a trail of parts behind so you can't get lost," he said.

There was even a replica of the battered police car from 1980 film The Blues Brothers, complete with glasses and hats sitting inside on the dash.

The winning car belonged to Pete Varetoni of Towaco. His 1935 Ford, retouched with a Chevy motor and suspension, has been a show car all over the east coast. "We just had this thing in Rhinebeck, NY for a show," he said. "This car has been hot-rodded since the 60s."

Varetoni has had the car for five years. He was presented with a large first place trophy for his winning wheels. The two runners up, a 67 Camaro and a 39 Chevy, were both presented with Township blankets.

If there was a prize for personality, it would have gone to John and his 1960 Cadillac, affectionately named "Snow White." While he was very proud of his car, which was stocked with all its original parts and kept in pristine condition, he was also enamored with its size.

"Look at the size of this trunk, you could fit at least two bodies in there," he joked.
