New Road May Be Given Historic Name

Commission tasked with naming new roads selects "Mandeville Road."

The historic preservation review commission passed a motion to recommend the naming of a road in a new development in Towaco at its meeting on Monday, July 26.

The commission plans to submit its recommendation of "Mandeville Road" to the land use and township committees for review, according to commission chairperson Michael O'Brian.

"The township committee has final word in everything," he said. "I will present our suggestion and they can by all means accept it. The usually take our suggestions unless there is some exception."

According to commission secretary Kathy Fisher, the commission is charged, by township ordinance, with the task of naming new streets within the municipality, along the guideline that suggested names must have historical or cultural significance to the township.

According to the town website, the name "Montville" came from the Mandeville Inn, which was mispronounced "mondeveil" by the area's Dutch settlers.  The town was officially named Montville in April, 1800. The Montville Inn is located on the site of the former Mandeville in at the corner of Route 202 and River Road.

The soon-to-be named Mandeville Road is located in a development off of Old Lane in Towaco, between Valhalla Road and Waughaw Road.

According to O'Brian, should the town committee accept the commission's recommendation, the process of naming the street will take effect on township maps and at local post offices before physical road markers are put in place.

The historic preservation review commission's next meeting is scheduled for August 23.
