UPDATE: Montville Elections Will Go On

Mayor said half of Montville polling places were without power Thursday, but police said voters should report to normal election sites.

While most of Montville remained without power this week, township officials took a few minutes Tuesday night to talk about the upcoming election.

Tropical Storm Sandy swept through New Jersey Monday, causing devastation to the Jersey shore and bringing President Barack Obama away from the campaign trail and instead to Atlantic City to assess damage. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also took a break from campaigning during and immediately after the storm.

Montville officials were unsure whether the election would be happening at all.

"They may postpone it on a national level," Township Administrator Victor Canning said.

But Canning said it would be difficult to change the election day for every state, even with a storm causing so much destruction to a number of them.

Some of the Montville polling locations remained without power Thursday.

"Half of our polling places have power and half don't," Mayor Tim Braden said. "If we need to move polling places, we will do so, but at this point, we're optimistic that our polling places will be up and running by Tuesday."

But by Thursday afternoon, police had sent a message saying normal polling places would be used Tuesday.

"Election day Tuesday. Polling places will be open, follow normal polling locations," police said in a Nixle alert.
