Montville Forecast: Torrential Rain, Gusts Start Saturday Night

A total of more than 8 inches of rain is forecast, along with 70 mph wind gusts on Sunday, as Hurricane Irene makes its way up the coast.

The National Weather Service forecast for Montville as of Saturday morning as Hurricane Irene makes its way up the coast:

Saturday: Scattered showers, then periods of showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 77. East wind between 5 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Tropical storm conditions expected. Periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 68. East wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to between 34 and 44 mph. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts in excess of 4 inches possible.

Sunday: Tropical storm conditions expected. Periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 p.m., then rain likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 74. North wind 45 to 55 mph decreasing to between 30 and 35 mph. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts in excess of 4 inches possible.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 56. West wind between 8 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. West wind between 3 and 6 mph.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 80.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 59.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 77.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Morris County, while a flood watch is in effect for most of New Jersey.

Hurricane Irene is tracking northward along the east coast with the the center of the hurricane passing very close to the coasts of Delaware and New Jersey from late Saturday into Sunday morning.

The storm will bring damaging winds, torrential rain with dangerous flooding and coastal flooding. Overall, 6 to 10 inches of rain are expected with a few locations getting more than 12 inches.

Heavy and possibly record setting rainfall through Sunday will ikely result in major flooding across portions of New Jersey, as well as Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.

Small creeks and streams are highly susceptible to flash flooding. The Passaic River is expected to react more slowly than some of the other rivers, but is still highly susceptible to flooding from this event.

Do not focus on the exact forecast track of the hurricane because it is a large storm.
