From the Sidelines: Campaign Signs May Be Needed, But This is Wrong

The do's and don'ts of campaign signs.

Saturday morning as I drove to work I saw rows of a candidate's campaign signs in places that they have never been before. They were in front of the Community Center and Lazar School and public buildings all over Montville.

It has been a long standing tradition by previous candidates that campaign signs do not belong on facilities that belong to all the people of Montville Township. I believe there is even an ordinance against it. Obviously private citizens can support anyone they want with a sign. That is a matter of free speech.

Signs along the right of way on a public street are OK but this is way over the top. The first signs in Montville began with a Republican Primary. Prior to that, when I was running and tried to get signs put up, the Township told me that I had to get a permit for every sign at $5 per sign and only on private property.

The rules changed when Republicans ran against each other and we have had signs ever since. They have gotten bigger and bigger as well and this year we reach new a new high but the use of schools, recreation fields and public facilities is just plain wrong and Annabell Pierce ought to apologise for it.

It shows a lack of respect for all the people of Montville Township whose tax dollars support these facilities. Even someone new to the Township should understand that and the people that are advising her should help her correct this. It doesn't speak well of her view of the respect for all the residents.
