Towaco Resident Pursues Better Living Through Yoga

Oasis Wellness offers Yoga and Karate for teens, tweens, and adults.

This Week's Neighbor: Mayra Sansone Aboyoun

  • Philosophy: Always remember to do what you love and love what you do.
  • What Part of Town: Lives and works in Towaco. Has been a resident for 14 years.
  • Favorite thing about Montville Township: Moved here for a better life, a better school system for her kids, and for the many opportunities this town offers.
  • Children:  a 12-year old and a 2-year old.
  • Business: Opened Oasis Wellness Center 8 years ago to help others to heal. The center offers classes in yoga for all ages and skill levels. There are also body work services like massage and Reiki. People go to Oasis Wellness Center to strengthen their body, and quiet their minds. Many also attend to overcome injuries.
  • Location: Across from the Towaco Train Station at 628 Main Road, Rt. 202, Towaco, NJ 07082, under the strip of shops. The entrance and parking are on the lower level behind the building.
  • Why Yoga: “People come here to feel better,” Mayra said. “And it’s great for their ego cause once someone accomplishes a pose they feel better about themselves.”
  • What Makes Her Special: Used to be an executive assistant in the fashion industry in Lyndhurst, NJ. The high level job came with long hours and a lot of stress. She was offered a promotion that, in addition to more stress, required a lot of travel. “Due to my family life, I had to reject it,” explained Mayra. “ I ended up leaving and pursuing what I had wanted to do for a very long time, which was taking better care of my body and helping others to heal.” Having practiced yoga since 1991, she opened Oasis Wellness Center to give others a place to come together to relax and take care of their health.
  • Of Note:
    • Tween yoga classes, for ages 7 to 14, have become so popular that an additional class has been added.
    • In the summer weekly yoga camps are offered.
    • The center is home to Karate classes from the Bushido Academy of Martial Arts.
    • The center offers yoga teacher certification classes.
    • There are at least 14 classes to choose from each week.
    • Class sizes usually range between 6 to 12 people.
  • Community: Often holds benefits for cancer research and other charities. Was a class mom from for her oldest all through elementary school, and is looking forward to doing the same for her youngest.
  • What is Unique about Her Work:  “We are unique because we develop a relationship with each other,” said Mayra about the teachers and students in her business. “You don’t come here and become a stranger. We become a family.”
