RSVP for Free Academic Workshops in Montville

Pre-register by Monday for Tuesday's 'Free G & T Reading Workshop' for grades 6-8.

Starting this Tuesday, parents should take advantage of a series of free academic workshops for their students.

Earlier this year, a Montville mother with two sons in the Montville schools, started the Academic Excellence Center at 2 Changebridge Road to address students’ academic, social and emotional needs.

The AEC is hosting a series of free workshops for the community:

  1. "Free G & T Reading Workshop" Grades 6-8 with in-house reading specialist on Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m. Participants must pre-register by November 11 as seating is limited.
  2. "Free G & T Reading Workshop" Grades 3-5 with in-house reading specialist on Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. Participants must pre-register by Nov. 14 as seating is limited.
  3. "Free College Planning Workshop" with AEC's college planning division on Nov. 23 from10 a.m. - noon. As seating is limited, we ask participants to register by Nov. 20 for the workshop.

Here's a closer look at each of the workshops:

"Free G & T Reading Workshop" Grades 6-8—"This includes a sample 45 min. class and a 10 min. preview for parents to learn about our 5 week program with our certified teacher and reading specialist. During the presentation parents will hear how their student will:

·       Learn techniques to improve concentration and retention;

·       Decrease homework time, achieve better comprehension, and retain more;

·       Learn to adjust reading speed depending on material

·       Learn a step-by-step approach to determine how information is organized in non-fiction reading, and identify main ideas and supporting details;

·       Learn effective note-taking and how to incorporate notes into studying for tests;

·       Develop strategies for learning new words and incorporating them into their vocabulary.

"Free College Planning Workshop"—"We will offer a complimentary 1 hour SAT math class followed by a 30 minute presentation from our financial aid expert and a 30 min presentation from our college coach who will discuss the college application and essay writing process."
