Eli's Corner Makes a Mean Bagel

Home of the Paris Hilton, the gourmet bagel shop in Montville is this week's pick for Bites Nearby.

Eli's Corner Gourmet Bagel, located in a corner of Red Barn Plaza on Main Road in Montville, offers fresh bagels, wraps and sandwiches with Boar's Head meats and cheeses.

You can, of course, get a bagel with cream cheese. But you also can get specialty sandwiches known as the Paris Hilton, Jersey Devil and Mustang Pride.

Special orders don't upset them, either. When a customer in front of me ordered butter on one side of his bagel and cream cheese on the other (he was celebrating his 10th birthday with an Eli's bagel), the staff hardly blinked.

A chalkboard outside will let you know you're there and what the specials are for the day. There is some seating inside. Bagels are 90 cents each.

For $6.99, I opted for the Mustang Pride special on a pumpernickel bagel. The turkey, avacado, cucumber, tomato and herbal mayo tasted great and the bagel was top notch. It came with chips, which I still haven't opened.

Store manager and chef Paul Fontana said the bagels are popular and that Eli's uses fresh, organic ingredients whenever it can.

"We make a mean bagel," he said.

The Paris Hilton, by the way, consists of turkey breast, mozzarella cheese, roasted peppers and herbal mayonnaise on a bagel, or in a wrap or hero.
