Dugout Gets Makeover After 33 Years

New owner re-opens Pine Brook deli.

Under new ownership and with a fresh look, The Dugout Cafe Bagels & Deli, formerly known as Donut Dugout, in Pine Brook, is now open.

Owner Avram Balasis has been working hard over the last several months to remodel the deli and give it a fresh new menu. The end result is an expanded version of what has been a community hot spot for more than 30 years.

"We have an in-house chef who makes everything here," Balasis said.

The Dugout has a new menu and fresh mozzarella cheese is made on site. All sandwiches and soups are also made at the deli. Bagels are not yet made at the deli, but delivered twice per day. Balasis is hoping to purchase more space in the plaza to expand and be able to bake bagels as well.

As far as the look of the restaurant, Balasis said several changes were made, including taking out an entire wall and putting in all new appliances. The hours of the renovated deli are new as well: Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"This place for 33 years has been closed on Sundays," Balasis said.

The Dugout Cafe offers dine-in service, takeout and catering.
