Donut Dugout Knocks Breakfast, Lunch Out of the Park

A 33-year-old shop that offers far more than its name implies is this week's pick for Bites Nearby.

Donut Dugout, located in a strip mall on Route 46 in Montville, offers coffee and donuts, of course, as well as French toast, pancakes, wraps, sandwiches and bagels. A new lineup of three-egg omelettes named after baseball players could be on the horizon.

Dominick Del Plato, a township resident who has owned for 4 1/2 years, says he is considering adjusting the name of the 33-year-old establishment to reflect more of the menu.

Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Given the name, I had my mind set on a donut and tried the apple crumb variety, which came recommended by Del Plato himself. The first thing I noticed was the satisfying ratio of filling to dough. It also was surprisingly not messy, with the crumbs and filling holding together quite nicely.

But what stood out to me most was the sweetness. I have a sweet tooth, so the taste was spot on, but if you like munching on a plain donut with your coffee, you might want to try one of the other flavors. With a name like Donut Dugout, I was expecting an exceptional donut and this did not disappoint.

The shop, which has counter seating and some tables, is open from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
