Montville to Thank CT Community for Donations

Food, toiletry donations will benefit local food pantry.

Montville officials are planning to send a "thank you" package to Montville, Conn., in appreciation of several boxes of donated goods that were sent to the shelter set up for residents after Superstorm Sandy.

Mayor Tim Braden asked Township Clerk Trudy Atkinson to gather memorabilia from the township to send to Connecticut officials and residents in gratitude for the six boxes worth of food and toiletries sent.

"I think we should send a letter thanking them," Township Committeeman Jim Sandham added.

The donated items arrived and were opened at the Senior House, where residents spent some time seeking warmth as they remained without power, on Nov. 7. Braden and Nancy Mertz, who works with the township's Social Services Department, opened the boxes to find cookies, crackers, tissue boxes, cleaning supplies and more. They also found a handwritten card from a Montville, Conn. resident and her pet. "Thinking of you in this difficult time," it said.

The donations were collected by Montville Patch (Connecticut) Editor Ellyn Santiago, who set up a bin in her town's municipal building. After the shelters were closed, Braden said the remaining items were brought to the Montville Township Kiwanis Food Pantry to benefit those in need.
