Montville Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

Chelsea resident Evelyn Berteele received a proclamation and visit from the mayor.

Evelyn Berteele celebrated her 100th birthday at her home at the Chelsea at Montville this week with friends, family and a visit from Mayor Tim Braden.

Braden presented Berteele with a proclamation Tuesday at the senior living residence on Changebride Road, the Chelsea announced.

Berteele, a native of West New York, N.J., spent most of her life as wife to her late husband, Victor, and mother to their two children, Craig and Charlene. She has two grandchildren.

Her best memories are of special occasions and holiday celebrations with her children. She also remembers difficult times during the depression when, making 50 cents an hour as an office worker, she was the sole means of support for her family, including her five younger siblings, a Chelsea news release said.

Two other Chelsea residents, Laura Nigro and Dorothy DiPietro, also are 100, and Zelda Shinderman turns 100 in December, the Chelsea said.
