Historic Society to Discuss 'Dining With History'

Phil and Jean Jaeger will lead presentation next Monday night.

“Dining with History” will be the subject of the next Montville Township Historic Society’s program on May 14 at the .

The program, presented by Phil and Jean Jaeger, will focus on restaurants, mostly in New Jersey but several in neighboring states, that began life as long ago as the 1700s.

In every case, the building itself is an important part of New Jersey’s heritage whether it originally was a stagecoach stop, railroad station, school, castle, private residence or other historic structure.

The Jaegers will recount the origins of many notable dining establishments, and also present exterior and interior views of the restaurants as they appear today. They will also point out nearby attractions of interest and provide a directory containing contact information for each restaurant discussed in the program. And maybe tell us what is good to eat.

Phil Jaeger is the author of two books, “Montclair: A Postcard Guide to Its Past” and “Cedar Grove," and a trustee of the Cedar Grove Historical Society and a former trustee of the Passaic County Historical Society. He is also a former director of the Canal Society of New Jersey and a member of the Metropolitan Railroad Club.

Jean Jaeger is a former elementary school teacher and previously served on the Cedar Grove Board of Education. She is currently an officer in the Cedar Grove Historical Society.

The Jaegers live in the house in which Allen B. Du Mont made significant advances in the cathode ray tube, which was used in televisions and computer monitors until the early 21st century. The Jaegers take many trips through history often dining at historic restaurants.

This will be the historic society's final meeting before the break for summer. The meeting, open to the public, will begin Monday at 7:30 p.m.
