Cats, Dogs Moved to New Shelter

Pets make move to Church Lane building.

More than 20 Montville Animal Shelter cats and dogs that are ready for adoption were moved to a new shelter on Church Lane at the end of July.

Nineteen cats moved in on July 28. They are staying in new stainless steel cages that were purchased by Montville Pet Parents.

Three dogs moved in on July 31.

"They were much easier since we just ended their walk at the new building," Montville Pet Parents President Sue Goldblatt said of the dogs. "The kennels at the new shelter were setup with beds, food and water and each dog had a treat and settled into their new location."

To move the cats, Gail Strumph, Montville’s animal control officer, planned the move and assigned tasks to each volunteer, Goldblatt said. There were people at the old shelter taking each cat, along with their food bowls and toys, and transporting them to the new shelter, where another team was setting up cages, moving the cats to their new cages and feeding them.

The move took about four hours until everyone was settled in their new home, Goldblatt said.

An issue with the air conditioning for the new shelter's isolation and quarantine area meant cats and kittens not ready for adoption were staying in the old shelter until repairs could be made.

"We've got a bit more work to do and more supplies and 'gear' to be moved but we're almost there," Goldblatt said.
