St. Pius X School and Montville Education Foundation Team Together on New Science Lab

St. Pius X Elementary School announced the opening of its new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) laboratory on Friday.  Fusing classroom instruction across the physical sciences and mathematics with practical laboratory applications, the St. Pius X School STEM program is designed to expand students’ understanding of science and engineering, nurture a desire to pursue further study in these fields and achieve measurable gains in students’ academic performance in these disciplines.  By partnering with the Stevens Institute of Technology, St. Pius X School is providing a high quality, standards based and technology integrated STEM learning environment validated by its use in over 1,650  NJ schools.

STEM Projects require using a multidisciplinary approach to designing experiments investigating scientific phenomena or creating functioning products.  Students will follow the scientific method( question, hypothesis, experiment, observe, analyze and share) or engineering process (problem definition, brainstorming, choose solution, build, test, communicate solution, redesign) as appropriate with emphasis on collaboration and presentation of findings to the broader group.

Support for the lab has come from private donations, fundraising events and a grant from the Montville Educational Foundation.
