“The Last Newspaperman”
Mark DiIonno, The Star Ledger award winning columnist, will talk about his new book at the next Montville Township
Historic Society’s program, November 12 (Monday), 7:30
p.m. in the Montville Township Senior House, 356 Main, Montville. A book signing will also be held afterward.
Mark’s new book has been called “riverting, a must read”.
Mark, who has written three other books on New Jersey’s heritage and natural beauty, has written his first fiction book which follows a newspaperman who covers sensational stories of the 1930’s in NJ (the Lindbergh kidnapping and trial, the Hindenburg explosion, the Ruth Snyder story, Orson Welles Martian attack radio program, and the Morro Castle ship sinking off the NJ coas)t. All of these stories were followed by the public closely and sold a lot of newspapers. The story illustrates the tabloid newspaper culture born in New Jersey and the celebrity media and media circus that occurs in reporting sensational and scandalous events.
Mark Di Ionno is a lifetime newspaperman and a four-time winner of the New Jersey Press Association’s first-place award for column writing. In addition to his twice-weekly column in The Star-Ledger, his “Mark in the Morning” column appears daily on NJ.com.
DiIonno is the author of three award-winning nonfiction books. New Jersey’s Coastal Heritage and A
Guide to New Jersey’s Revolutionary War Trail won the New Jersey Academic Alliance Award, which is judged by a consortium of librarians and historians. Backroads, New
Jersey was named among the most notable New Jersey books (1995–2005) by the New Jersey Center for the Book.
