Montville Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Nick Mayse Organizations: Montville High School Boys Lacrosse Accomplishment: Scored his 200th goal on Monday Key To Awesomeness: Offensive prowess. Mayse is one of the team's three captains and a catalyst for the Mustangs on offense. Head coach Rick DeBonta said Monday that his offense did what he wanted and that the team looks to score 12 points every game, and with Mayse shooting like he did on Monday, it isn't out of the question.
Montville Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Brook Nagel and Noah Sokaler Grade: Fifth Organizations: Hilldale School Accomplishment: Opening the 18th Annual Michelle Sullivan Basketball Game Key To Awesomeness: Civic-minded pipes. The two Hilldale students kicked off the Michelle Sullivan basketball game at Montville High School March 24 with a singing of the national anthem. Nagel and Sokaler were part of the game, which raises money for the township's athletics by pitting parents from Hilldale and Woodmont in a charity basketball game that raises over $3,000 annually.
Name: Deep Dheri, 16 School: Junior at Montville Township High School. Award: Won the state championship in the Junior Varsity division of Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Dheri bested over twenty contestants to take home the top trophy in his division. According to Dheri, the topic up for debate this year was “Private military firms and whether they should be used abroad by the United States to pursue our military objectives.” The MTHS team was provided with the topic one month prior to the March 3rd and 4th competition, giving them an opportunity to research all sides of the issue. Award: Placed 1st in the state in International Extemporaneous Speaking. “What that means,” explained Klein, “is that we are given 30 minutes to prep a seven minute speech on a question that we draw before the round. In international, they’re all internationally based. They range from anything from foreign policy, to the middle east, to China.” Normally the Extemporaneous Speaking category encompasses both domestic and International topics. While there was plenty of coverage of Montville High School's wrestlers at this past weekend's state wrestling tournament in Atlantic City, a word needs to be said about Sal Mastriani of Don Bosco Prep. The Montville resident won fourth place in his 145-pound weight class, making him only one of two Montville-based wrestlers to place in the tournament. Montville Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Dylan M. Grabinski and John Stretavski Organizations: Boy Scout Troop 172 Accomplishment: Reached Eagle Scout Key To Awesomeness: Community service. Grabinski and Stretavski were both honored by the Morris County Board of Freeholders at its February 23 meeting for their achievement in reaching the Eagle rank, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. The two were honored for their accomplishments and community service at a ceremony at the Senior House in February.

Montville's heavyweight wrestler tips the scales at close to 285 pounds. Of course, size isn't the only thing that matters. Experience has helped Bernstein, as he was able to learn from past mistakes and beat Pequannock’s Mike Spencer, the wrestler who beat Bernstien out for a Morris County title in 2010. Montville Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Sophia Laurenzi and Daniela Mallack Age: 16 and 17 respectively Organizations: Montville Township High School, sophomore, and Trinity Christian School, junior, respectively Accomplishments: Both students competed within their respective schools to represent that school at the National Endowment for the Arts’ Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest’s Region 4 Finals. Montville Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Bennet "Lil' B" Schwartz Age: 8 Organizations: Garden Sk8, Montville Broncos Accomplishment: Doing more at age 8 than most people do in a lifetime. Key To Awesomeness: Skateboard prowess. Todd Schwartz, Bennet’s father, says that “Lil’ B” has been a savant on the board since he started at age 5. Bennet has the awards to back it up, taking First Place in the Mimi Ramp King of the Grom Qualifier in 2009, as well as Second and Third Place in the Bowl and Vert competitions.
