Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Our Pet Project: Collecting Your Snow Photos As we often do, we put out the call to during the two recent snowstorms for readers' photos. And we found ... readers sure do love to see their pets frolicking in the snow. But the most original animal image we got had to be from Ron Caruso of East Valley Brook Road in Long Valley, who e-mailed over a picture of his llama, Larry, enjoying the winter weather (we initially thought Larry was an alpaca—our mistake). Other great animal shots came from: Isabelle Ramotowski of Montville, whose German Shephard loves the snow Andrew Gering, who sent along …
We're still getting comments on Montville Patch's Dec. 23 story about the Montville School Board's decision to cancel a referendum vote regarding turfing the athletic field at Montville High School. The board learned the project would cost taxpayers more than expected.  Truscha Quatrone wrote: I am pleased the BOE was able to figure out the cost of this project. I guess what is surprising is they hadn't done any of that investigation before planning a special election. This issue was put to the voters in 2005 and it was rejected by the voters. Why would this be put to another vote? The …
The Montville Township Board of Education voted recently to cancel a late-January referendum vote regarding turfing the athletic field at Montville High School, after finding the tax impact would be greater than expected. Some of our readers thought it was the prudent choice, given the tough economy and Montville High's own woes—but not all. Concerned Citizen writes: Another time perhaps, but not when you've just laid off 37 custodians from the Montville school system. But that argument was answered by Dr. Michael Duddy, who said: To compare the field to the custodians is apples and oranges…
Look, you can get to your senior year of  high school, you can graduate from a State Trooper program—but to family members, you'll always be their "little guy." Montville reader Jesse Kwiatek wrote on a story about John Stretavski III's achievements:  Super job little guy. I am very proud of you and love you so much. — Uncle Jess. John, when Uncle Jess picks out nicknames, does he consider that if you continue along the path to a law enforcement career, someday you might carry a gun? Some of the other comments Morris, Somerset and Sussex Patch sites received over the last week: It was …
It's no secret that some of the towns in Morris, Sussex and Somerset Counties lean a bit to the right—sometimes very much so. So when we asked readers of Patch sites throughout New Jersey what they thought of President Barack Obama and Sen. Robert Menendez (both Democrats), perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that we didn't get a single positive response from anyone in that area. According to the most recent statewide poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind, 31 percent of voters in Menendez's New Jersey constituency have a favorable opinion of him, and 25 percent have an …
Ok, so normally we start off our weekly comments-of-the-week feature by highlighting one of the best reader contributions to this Patch, then we share some of the others from our nearby sister sites. Only, we don't think we've seen the best comment of the week yet. We've seen some great ones–but we're still holding out for one worth a $250 prize for your favorite charity. That's what we're offering as a reward for whoever shares the best Thanksgiving tale. Hit the link to gobble up details about how you can help a good cause while sharing your Turkey Day adventures. But once you've done …
Montville Patch reader John Smith was among the types of residents we were talking about with our article Cablevision Rate Increase Irks Subscribers. Lesson learned: don't mess with John's TV: It's kind of funny that they only raise the Basic/Family plans and not the Internet/Phone or Premium plans. They make the little guy suffer and try to force their other plans down their throat, claiming that it will be cheaper. Getting very tired of this practice. It's absurd at what they are charging to minimal service ($70). They should leave the little guy alone and raise the Internet/Phone and …
In Montville, readers appreciated this week that longstanding Van Duyne Cider Mill is still going strong: Just wanted to say that I've been going to the Cider Mill since I was a child. It has been great to be able to share that part of my childhood with my children I only live down the street and it's still one of my favorite places in Montville. I only wish the whole town had stayed the way it was.—A Krentz Great article about one of the places that makes Montville so special. It would be great if the Township Committee / Open Space Committee worked on coming up with a solution to help keep …
