What Has Sandy's Wrath Cost You?
Power outages hurt financially, but are also painful mentally and emotionally.
Superstorm Sandy brought down trees, power lines and caused widespread outages that left some in the dark for two weeks.
The historic storm impacted the lives of everyone—some more so than others.
The ability to purchase fuel became a problem, as long lines swarmed Montville area gas stations.
Schools were impacted. District buildings lost power, keeping children at home for an extended period of time. For some, childcare became necessary while others lost a bit of sanity with kids running up the walls.
Without power, you can't cook at home, which means you spent a whole lot of money on takeout food.
Then there was also the damage caused by the fallen trees and wires.
What was the storm's impact—financially, emotionally and mentally—for you?

Five days without power, and all I lost is about $30 in spoiled food and $5 worth of candles. Likely saved at least as much off electricity bill. The mental toll could be much bigger if not for my employer's generosity: the office was close by, warm, well lit, had Internet, and offered free hot food throughout the whole recovery period.

Power out for five days, internet, tv, phone for 11 days. Lost three very tall Fir trees $900, part of my roof and three days of business revenue. We consider ourselves the lucky ones, we still have our home. God Bless my neighbor for giving us two lines of power to keep refrigerators running. Going out in the middle of the night, stand in long lines to get gas for the generator. They did the same last October 2011.

Power out 13 days (no heat/water), cable still out, at least 4 big trees down that are going to cost me $$ to remove, drainage pipes ripped out of the ground due to 1 tree falling, 1 broken window, damaged shingles. We feel blessed, though, as the trees all fell AWAY from the house, so structural damage was limited. Our generator held out, although my poor husband had to suffer through hours of lines waiting for gas to fill it, and we have a fireplace for heat. Also the predicted rains didn't come, so I didn't have to worry about my sump pump failing!!

11 days no power cost about $150 in gasoline for the generator. Fortunately no damage to the house or lost food from the fridge.

"Fool me once" feeling quite ill &, actualy still recovering from the catastrohy of last Oct.,we hitailed it to the Best Western in Fairfield on #46 the nite before Sandy's arrival.
We could never had gotten a room had we not used this pre-empmtive action. One inite w/o power & 12 nites in releative comfort. The greatest trauma was an inactive cel. phone .due to att. cel tower problems,& no virtual communication w./any figurehead from Montville twsp. Therefore, my repeated sugestion; so there is NEVER A REPEATOF THIS DISTRESS DURING ANY CRISIS; ALL TAXPAYERS MUST REVEAL A CEL # OR E-MAIL ADDRESS WHEREAS COMMUNICATION OF CONDITIONS OF THEIR AREA ARE TRANSMITTED AS WELL AS PARTICULARS RE; THEIR PROPERTY IE;CONDITION TO THEM WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME. NO DELAY EFFECTING THIS PRACTICE BY THE TWSP. COMM. IS ACCEPPTABLE!
