Students Break Into High School's Computer System

Superintendent: 'If any information was tampered with, it is being restored.'

The Montville Township School District is investigating a breach of the high school’s computer system that took place last week.

According to Superintendent Dr. Paul Fried, the high school’s student information system was broken into. The district is looking into the possibility of records being tampered with.

In a letter to the district’s parents, Fried said the breach has been remedied and that students committed the breach.

“The police were notified and we are quite certain that the students responsible have been identified,” he said. “ Because they are students, I am not permitted to releases their names, nor may I discuss any discipline.

Fried said that the district’s technology department is working to see if any information has been tampered with and that he plans to hold a “community-focused forum” addressing cheating in response to this incident later in the spring.

“Our parents, teachers and students will be invited to attend,” he said. “There is much speculation as to why our young adults feel compelled to cheat, including pressure they feel to get accepted into top colleges. I am certain that by working together, we can transform our school community into a more a honest and caring place.”
