Shared Parking Lot Considered for Library, High School

Library board discusses multi-use parking lot while considering potential solar project.

With the Montville Township Public Library and Montville Township High School on adjoining properties, finding parking for one or the other can be, at times, challenging.

At least according to those who use the lots and residents and business owners near the high school who have complained of students parking on their properties.

Montville Township Public Library Board of Trustees Member Robert Lefkowitz mentioned the concerns of those residents Monday before suggesting the library board and Montville Township Public Schools Board of Education consider working together to construct a multi-purpose parking lot for use by both buildings' drivers.

"[The high school has] a need for more parking, maybe it's time that everybody says, 'Well, let's look at it together,'" he said.

Mayor Tim Braden said at Monday's library board meeting that he had a conversation with a solar panel company which was familiar with the library parking lot. As the library board has been considering installing solar panels on the parking lot to help reduce electricity costs, Braden said it may be beneficial to have further conversations with the company.

"If they can help us out, give us some cost estimates...I think we'd be ahead," he said.

However, Braden said the solar company did not think panels would work with the current layout of the parking lot, with rows running north to south, as much as they would work with rows running east to west.

The library board has also been discussing paving the parking lot and Lefkowitz said constructing a new parking lot that would accomodate the solar project and more spaces for the use of both buildings may be a good idea.

Braden said he liked the concept of the multi-purpose lot and that it should be explored further.

I don't personally care what they decide to do. One thing for sure, I like the idea of working together. I don't know if these library folks are elected or appointed. Regardless, they should work together with the schools, the township, whatever. We are a community. All for one. Good for them for wanting to discuss with the schools to search for a solution that works for all!

On the solar, I thought I heard the school board is starting a project sometime over the next few months at the two bigger schools? I believe they are using roofs.

I have seen parking lots with solar overhead. Sorry, it looks ugly to me. I think that makes a beautiful building (library) look less attractive.

Perhaps there's another way to deliver solar to that building?

Sharing the library lot with the high school would be fine as long as it were by permit only so as not to be completely overridden with cars for the school. As it is, it's very difficult to find a spot to park to use the library near the time the school lets out since many parents park there while waiting to pick up their kids. I agree the high school needs more parking, but why not turn the small grass field between the baseball field and the football field into a parking lot? My kids say it's not used for much and could be better served as a parking lot.

You mean the area that was a parking lot for many years ?

Who's going to pay for this amenity?

I think this is an awesome idea! The high school NEEDS more parking. It's probably something they should have considered before they demolished the secondary student parking lot a few years back and turned it into a (poorly draining, underused, grab grass infested) field.

I like the idea a lot-- the high school definitely needs more parking! For those concerned with the cost, perhaps parents can apply for permits at a low cost ($10 or so?) with the money obviously not totally funding, but at least contributing to the cost.

As for the aesthetic concern, I personally find smog and the other byproducts of generator-produced power more visually offensive than parking lot solar panels...

Definite no to the solar panels. They will soon become a big money drain; inevitable vandalism will take its toll on the panels, and the government is about to run out of subsidy money.

I'm unsure about connecting the lots, though. While the existing school lot is clearly inadequate, the project would cost a lot of money that won't be recouped, and people coming to the library during post-school hours will experience severe parking spot shortage.

They have enough land to create a parking lot. I'd rather see the money go to more or expanded parking than artificial turf. AND NO to solar. It's a great idea in the future, but at this time. There is maintenance to consider, so the panels receive as much energy from the sun. AND the savings aren't really there yet. If they were, I would have had them installed on my home.

I'm originally from Union. There is plenty of parking and it's FREE. At least when I went there. Montville should do the same.
