Gas: 'There Are No Shortages,' Mayor Says

Some power restored to Montville as long lines continue at the pumps.

Those long lines at the gas pumps may seem daunting, but should not frighten motorists into thinking there is a gas shortage, according to Montville Mayor Tim Braden.

Braden said Friday that the lines are caused by some people actually in need of gas while others are merely topping off their tanks. Others are filling containers for generators to power parts of their homes, but the gas stations continue to receive their supply.

"There are no shortages, there will be no shortages," Braden said. "If people can just sit home and wait this out...but that's not people's nature."

In addition to the Shell station on Changebridge Road, the Montville Valero had power restored Thursday night, Braden said. The gas stations will continue to serve customers until they run out of gas, but the wait could be several hours long, as some residents said Thursday.

The only thing I know from yesterday's info is that the roads in Pine Brook near 7 Eleven on Changebridge road are open. I do not know the names of the roads. Sorry. Maybe someone else can give you more detailed information.

No shortage?? I'll have some of what *he* is smoking, because that is a load of hooey. There are stations all over that have power but are closed because they have no gas and aren't getting deliveries. Just drive down Rt 23 from Kinnelon to Wayne. Those stations would be open if they had a supply. So to blame the lines on people topping off and not on a delivery shortage is hogwash, Mr. Mayor.

little confused on how "Rt 23 from Kinnelon to Wayne" would fall under the contral of the Mayor from Montville?

Tom Schopper, are you that clueless? If only 25% of stations have power (it may be less for all I know), 100% of the people have to utilize them, and they run out. The other 75% without power, have gas in the tanks but cannot get it out. The original 25% in the example can't refill fast enough. The mayor is RIGHT, there is plenty of gas that cannot currently get pumped. Do you get it or are you just pathetic and have to blame somebody for your problems?

Well, Karl -- kudos to you for keeping this an intellectual discussion and not reverting to name-calling... [Insert sarcasm HERE]. So let's see if I can break it down so *you* can get it.

To begin: I never, not once, said I had a problem or blamed anyone *for* a problem.

My point was and is that the Mayor is wrong to say that there is no shortage -- because there is (and the facts and common sense prove it). And if you think the Mayor is right, then you are wrong too. Here's why: this is a State-wide and region-wide problem, so let's factor out the fact that Montville is or has been mainly without power -- the issue is wider than what stations do or don't have electricity in Montville. So look around: are there stations (your "made up" 75%) that don't have power? Sure (even though you just pulled numbers out of your....hat....we'll use them). But there are stations that *do* have power and *did* have gas and *did* have lines out the wazoo even as of yesterday... but today, those stations are closed -- with signs that say "no gas". You even stated why: because they can't get filled up fast enough. [continued]

[continuing]
And why is that? Heck -- if the 3/4th majority of stations in your scenario don't even have power, the 1/4 minority that do *should* have more than enough supply coming their way to remain open -- but they don't. They can't get deliveries. Because the shipping lanes into the ports have been closed/hobbled and the tank terminals in Linden etc. have been shut down since the storm. Which has meant that the supplies coming to those open station are short, doesn't it. Right - it does. That's what a shortage IS, for Pete's sake. If there was no shortage, the stations that have power and have been pumping would still *be* pumping. But in large numbers, they aren't. Because there is a delivery shortage. It's really that simple -- "do you get it"? The mayor is wrong and you are wrong. And the quotes from the Gov. today in signing the order to ration even/odd plates confirms it. (See: "Calling the fuel supply in the state a 'shortage' that could endanger public health, safety and welfare, the rationing will take place in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties." http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/11/sandy_gas_ration_12_counties.html#incart_maj-story-1)

So lose the name-calling, stop putting words in my mouth and try to understand what is going on here.

Does anyone know if Rout 46 East in Parsippany is still closed. I come from near Mountain Lakes and need to take Route 46 East to Changebridge Road in Montville. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I'm a Montville native, but currently live in Florida. Maybe in times of crisis, gas stations should follow the example of supermarkets. Designate one island for "3 gallons or less" Then all islands would probably move faster!

Diana you don't want to add any common sense to this situation do you? I sit and watch the gas lines that form in from of where I work and watch new delieveries to these gas stations coming in. There is a level of panic setting in and some of it is unwarranted.

Dan - why hasn't the town just put into effect odd/even days - it worked fine in the past . The lines would be cut in half . Belleville has just put that in place

"little confused on how 'Rt 23 from Kinnelon to Wayne' would fall under the contral of the Mayor from Montville?"

I'm sure you can figure it out, Wally. For starters, gas stations within the Montville borders aren't under the mayor's control either, so that is a non-issue. It was merely to illustrate the point that there are gas stations ALL AROUND YOU, not just in your one town, that do have electricity and those stations don't have gas and aren't getting deliveries. It is *not* a matter of people "topping off" when they don't need to - it is because deliveries aren't being made. So it *IS* a shortage - and for the mayor to say there isn't one is inaccurate and irresponsible.

Drove past at least 10 stations in Montville and surrounding towns with "no gas" signs. The one I saw open had at least 70 cars in line and 50 people standing around with gas cans. I don't know how I am getting I work in englewood Monday.

Exactly, 'mom' -- and that is somehow "no shortage" *and* a point that some here are "a little confused" about? This is no way that people are "merely topping off their tanks" nor would be remedied if people just sat home and waited it out. Ludicrous.

After reading about how international restrictions are being lifted in lieu of the shortage in the Star Ledger, it pretty much confirmed to me the shortage is real. I am no idiot. My husband goes out to fill our cans. My car has been driven four miles since Sunday. So STOP driving to movies shopping visit your friends and jumping on line. What you are doing is not necessary!!

Tom Schopper, After talking to several people in their cars in line yesterday to do the reporting for a previous story, I can confirm that many people did say they had tanks that were 3/4 full while they were there. While I'm sure that's not every driver, some of them were topping them off.

I'm sure that is the case, Ariana -- and that certainly isn't helping things. But the fact remains that it made no sense for the mayor to have said there is no shortage when the facts and the Governor's own words and actions today show otherwise.

I guess Christie just mandated odd/even gas purchasing because there is no shortage.
