Fire Rips Through Lake Valhalla Home
Cause of fire is still unknown but neighborhood remains without power.
An afternoon fire destroyed much of a Macleay Road home, in the Lake Valhalla section of Montville, Tuesday afternoon.
Montville Township police Capt. Ed Rosellini said the cause of the fire is still unknown, but that the neighborhood remained without power since Tropical Storm Sandy made landfall Oct. 29. Rosellini said it is possible that a generator or candle inside the home caused the fire. A few streets away, power trucks with linemen could be seen working on restoring the lines.
Officials responded just before 3 p.m. An officer on the scene said no one was home at the time of the incident.
Firefighters from the Montville Volunteer Fire Department and Towaco Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene.
Patch will have updates on this story.

This is so sad, and was probably avoidable if JCP&L didn't take over a week to restore power. My heart goes out to this poor family.

Very sad situation, but also very unfair to cast blame on JCP&L until you know the facts

OK I'll take that. And of course you have to use caution with candles etc...
Just wondering if it would have occurred if they had power....

JCP&L had 90% of their customers without power. The crews are working 12+ hours per day seven days a week. Please try to understand this is a dire situation for all.

Nah, not cutting them a break. Not this time. I was out a week during Frankenstorm 2011 and in March 2010 out so long my basement flooded because my sump pumps failed. Bought a generator after that one. This time my neighbor knocked on my door because JCP&L had our neighborhood down as restored. Reported outage again like it was the first time Friday afternoon. Tried to reach a human being. Offices closed - at 2pm Friday afternoon. No reps. working.

Why don't we all just keep the family in our prayers and be thankful it wasn't our homes.

The time the picture was posted the owner was still standing outside and the fire was not under control yet. There was so possible way to determine what the possible causes could have been at that time if the house was still in flames. Later the firemen did say that there was no possible way it could have been candles or the generator since the fire started in the garage- both of those items were absent. It is thought to be caused by a power serge.

I lived in that house for about 10 years and it makes me very sad to see the destruction and horror of what a fire can do. I'm glad that everyone is safe. Lake Valhalla is a great place to live. I have never heard of that electric company before . I live in California now. God bless. D.

Blame Sandy, not Jcp&L. Sorry about the house.
