Coyotes Spotted by Kanouse Lane Resident, Cops Say
Coyotes in Montville 'not unusual,' but could become an issue if they are near people.
Montville police responded to a call from a Kanouse Lane resident who said they saw coyotes near their home Tuesday morning.
The call came in around 8 a.m. While it was not confirmed that the animals the resident saw were, in fact, coyotes, or how many there were, Capt. Rudy Appelmann said residents have been known to confuse coyotes with other animals.
"More than likely, it was a fox," he said.
This is not the first time a resident said they saw a coyote in Montville. Last year, Appelmann said police responded to a report of coyote sightings near Pyramid Mountain. When asked whether coyote sightings are common for this area, Appelman said "it's not normal, but it's not unusual. They avoid people."
Coyotes mostly poke around garbage, similar to bears, and hunt small animals. They typically try to stay away from humans, Appelman said, but when they become a nuisance, there may be cause for concern.
"If they're remaining in contact with people then there's an issue," he said.

I think most of us have been living in Montville long enough and seen enough of the animals around her to know the difference between a fox and a coyote. I had two coyote (and no, they weren't fox, and they weren't stray dogs) wander into my yard before and when I went outside to scare them off, they both looked at me with no fear and took their time leaving.

If I called the police everytime I saw a coyote or a fox near my house, they wouldn't have time for their coffee and donuts! Do these people realize where they live?

Ok, now this is GREAT!!!! Fox? Really? The person who called was my neighbor and NO THEY WERE NOT FOXES ... There were at least 6 of them and they were howling extremely loud (which is what made me look outside my bedroom window in the first place)! It really was kinda crazy. After running around his backyard for a good 5 minutes, they went back into the water detention basin behind our homes.

Paula, I saw two (maybe the same ones?) on Eugene Drive in Longview two nights ago. Montville is lucky to have them, along with turkey, deer, and black bear.

Ron, You are right! We love our wildlife....maybe the city slickers should have done their homework before coming here.

I've seen coyotes, turkeys, fox, deer, bear, even a bobcat! Not only can I tell one from the other, I consider it a privilege to have them (one that will probably end soon, if it hasn't already, due to the monstrous Susquehanna Roseland debacle happening nearby). Maybe that's why they're being spotted in unusual areas.

I recently saw a coyote run across River Rd from the ballfield parking lot towards the river / golf course with his jaws clamped around some prey it had just caught. It was definitely not a fox!

I think a coyote ran across a road here in Monroe, Middlesex county, late one night. It was too big to be a cat or dog and much smaller than a deer. Only got a glimpse for a few seconds,
